Comments Thread For: Barrera Not Ready to Say Goodbye, and Neither are We

By Thomas Gerbasi - Nearly 21 years ago, a teenager named Marco Antonio Barrera stepped through the ropes for the first time as a professional with a simple philosophy, one that had nothing to do with his middle class upbringing, the looks that earned him the nickname “The Baby Faced Assassin”, or his dreams of one day becoming a lawyer.

That would all get left at the steps leading into the ring in Mexico City, and as he told me in 2005, what happened in combat was akin to entering a different world, one where you might not be recognizable to those who knew you in your civilian life. You were now something different, more primal, and it had everything to do with the color of your passport.

“A Mexican believes that once you sign that contract, you go into that ring and leave it all there – all your anger, your pride, everything,” said Barrera. “And whether you win or lose, you can never come back and say that I should have done this, or I should have done that.” [Click Here To Read More]

I'm ready to say goodbye. Far as I know Marco don't need money so I hate seeing him drag it out when he's clearly past it. If he was in position to grab another title it'd be one thing. But I don't see it happening for him at this point. The Khan fight was tough to watch. I admire his guts for not quitting over the cut, but that fight was really the last glimmer of hope for him. When he lost, it was a sign to hang em up.

Gerbasi and Hauser...those are some bad-ass Toms. I don't think Barerra is shot like some do. Think of what Manny did to Ricky, Oscar and Cotto. Not just cuase he's gotten bigger, those guys were still bigger than him, but because they simply couldn't handle that type of fight. In the Pacquiao - Barrera re-match, Marco boxed and moved beautifully the first half of the fight, but refused to engage. I don't think that's it's he can't pull the trigger anymore, I think he was gun-shy, and needed a confidence builder (in that I mean, not getting KTFO), since he took such a beating the fist time around. As far as the Kahn fight goes, that should've been stopped two rounds before, but they needed four complete for Amir. That was a seriously deep cut. I think Saturday will leave no doubt whether Barrera should call it quits for real, but I think he's got a championship run at 135 in him, if they do it smart.
