The reason is simple, Green relies too much on his left hook. Its a monstrous weapon but if you noticed, Ward kept his right hand up to his right jaw, to where Green couldn't fire and had no answer for anything else. If you also notice, Green isn't too special in anything. He has a feeler jab(similar to Mosley), got decent speed(Ward outclassed him here), ok footwork, but also keeps trying to wait for a chance to unload his left hook to where when he saw that he couldn't hit it to Ward...he just seem to lose that drive and was frustrasted and was defeated right when round 5 started. Its like he gave up.
BigRagu on youtube here describes Allan Green's Blueprint perfectly and Ward execute it flawlessly

Also Ward putting Green in a place he wasn't comfortable with definitely caught Green off guard to where he had no answer. But at the same time, Green tried to do this too BUT Ward could adapt much better to the inside fighting. B-hop does this quite a bit, diffusing his opponent's game plan by pressing him close. Another guy, in the manga Hajime no Ippo...Keiichi Take...did the same thing to Ippo here:

He put him in a place he wasn't comfortable with. Ward did the same thing to Green.
Despite the holding and clinching, i thought Ward did a very impressive job. If he beats Dirrell in the 3rd round, defeats Abraham in the finals and then defeats Brute in the Unification bout...then he'll definitely be Pound for Pound top 5!
