What happens if Bute fights the winner of the Super Six and is dominated throughout the entire fight only to get on lucky punch in at the end to win by lucky KO??

    Is he then number one?

He can’t be considered number one without being in the tournament, because maybe he can win against one of the boys in the Super Six, but could he win five or six fights in a row against all of them??

I say: Line e.g. Kessler, Dirrell, Abraham and Ward (or Froch) up and fight Bute after the winner has been found. You still think Bute comes out on top??

I like Bute (for his boxing, not for the opposition he has faced), but you can’t really discuss whether he is number one or not, when his not in the tournament.

And even #2 is high enough to make his exclusion ridiculous and to mean that the tournament could not credibly claim to be to decide who the #1 fighter is, unless on the basis that the winner would fight him for all the marbles, or unless he loses or looks bad in the meantime. He would have to slip to at least #3 in the rankings before any fight not involving him could be for The Ring title.

But in any case, as I say, he was #1 by the time Green was invited in preference to him.
Your comparison was with excluding the no.1 from a new tournament in another division. I was just pointing out that the no.1 was included in the supersix.

having Bute jump in as sub for Taylor would be nice from a fan standpoint, but for management, promotional and prestige reasons not a real option for Bute.

Bute is running out of competition as it is. fighting the Jesse Brinkley's of the world gives him nothing in terms of legacy. I hope he fights one of the two elimnatees and a semifinal loser. That way he's close to have faced the same competition as the Supersix winner and we can all enjoy a grand finale with a crowning of a new Ring champion.
