Super-lightweight boxer Martin Sanchez has died from injuries sustained in a 10 round non title bout against Russian Rustam Nugaev at the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on Friday (July 1).
The 26 year old Mexican boxer was knocked out after 2.09 of the ninth round in what was a tough competitive fight. Sanchez was reportedly knocked down and fell under the ropes but was prevented from falling out of the ring by a ringside reporter.
Sanchez recovered to take up a count from referee Kenny Bayliss, though took a knee. Sanchez was examined after the fight by two different doctors at different times and both doctors were satisfied the boxer was fine.
But later on in the night Chris Togoni, a commission inspector, noticed Sanchez was acting strangely and summoned doctors to him again and Sanchez immediately admitted to the Valley Hospital, where he underwent emergency brain surgery.
Neurosurgeon Jason E. Garber removed a large subdural hematoma, but there was also a massive swelling of the brain. Sanchez was placed on a ventilator but was pronounced dead at 11am on Saturday morning.
