Floyd Mayweather Sr continued his recent "full court press" against Manny Pacquiao in the media. A few days ago, Floyd Sr ripped into Manny Pacquiao with a venomous verbal assault. Most of his comments centered around Manny Pacquiao winning the BWAA's "Fighter of the Decade" award. In a follow up interview, my colleague Chris Robinson caught up with the elder Mayweather to clarify his attack.
Right out of the gates, Floyd Sr comes out looking to KO Manny with more of his verbal garbage:
“It’s a bunch of bull**** because he doesn’t deserve it. If he was standing up to all the challenges and was undefeated it seems like he would be worthy of the award of the decade. He’s been beat by names that you don’t even know a couple of times. Nobody even knows those guys."
I think Floyd Sr has his facts all wrong here. And/or he's blending together 2 separate arguments. Let's examine this further.
If we are just looking at the decade for which Manny won the award, then the only fight he lost was a unanimous decision to Erik Morales. Last I checked, Erik Morales is a well known fighter. In fact, he's a legendary Mexican boxer who's won multiple world championships in several weight classes. So, I don't understand how Floyd Sr can make the statement that Manny lost to someone nobody has heard of.
I've also seen in the past where the Mayweathers claim that Manny lost both fights to Juan Manuel Marquez. I believe, Floyd Sr is also counting Pacquiao's encounters with JMM as losses. But once again, most boxing fans have heard of JMM. In fact, when they were hyping up the fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Juan Manuel Marquez last year, the Mayweathers gave JMM credit for being one of the top boxers in the world. So, Floyd Sr can't have it both ways. He can't be unheard of when he fights Manny but one of the greatest in the world for when he fights Floyd Jr.
The comments that really stuck out for me in this interview, was when Floyd Sr hypothetically talked about being Manny Pacquiao's trainer
"I could take a fighter like Pacquiao and make him better, yes. I could make him better than Freddie Roach of course. I definitely would make him a much better fighter."
Just the thought of Floyd Sr training Manny Pacquiao hurts my head. It's like trying to count to infinity. Nobody can do it and trying only makes your head spin. Floyd Sr goes on to discuss what he could do to make Manny a better fighter:
"There are a lot of things he needs to do that he doesn’t have. He doesn’t have combinations. He don’t have a jab. He has no defense."
Did Floyd Sr watch Manny's last two fights where he threw more combinations and jabs than his opponents Joshua Clottey and Miguel Cotto? Manny takes a lot of criticism for his defense, but I say his offense is so great that it overshadows his defense.
Conclusion
Once again, we get another attack against Pacquiao from his biggest fans, the Mayweathers. But this time, Floyd Sr had to trample over Freddie Roach as well.
Floyd Sr comments on Freddie's illness and makes light of his boxing career. Is there nothing that these Mayweathers won't comment on?
