Is there a heavyweight champion of the world?

I'm sure there was one... some big guy from Russia or something, talking about dominating. However, I haven't seen him for seven months now, and he's only had one fight since being world champ. What's more, it'll be another six months at least before we see him again.

What about that tricky guy with the moves who can't hit? Haven't seen him in action since last November, and can't find any news of upcoming bouts?

The guy with the beard who grabs a lot? He lost his title, then got it back when it became vacant. He lost his title, then got it back on a technicality.

There seem to be a lot of people around these three making a lot of noise, but they're not really worth a damn: that big Nigerian guy (slow, easy to hit, got a punch but will be exposed at top level), the Rahman fella (mediocre talent and chin, still living off the back of a lucky punch the best part of five years ago) and some guy who shouts a bit and entertains but didn't really outclass the guy with the beard more than an inch.

So... the conclusion has to be the noise in the division is Lamon Brewster. A hard-hitting old-style fighter looking to make his mark. You're only as good as your last fight? When most of the premier division hasn't even had a fight this year then Brewster is the current ambassador for what is, bizarrely, 2005 boxing's forgotten division.

Anyone that can box will easily beat Lamon Brewster (unless their ****** and waste all their energy for 4 rounds trying to KO him).

He can take a punch but he lost UD to Clifford Etienne! He has a good chin and a decent punch, but that's about it. He took advantage of Wlad's ******ity and just survived long enough for Wlad to basically fall over on his own.

Golota has been **** for years (like Tyson) and Brewster just took advantage of that too (a la McBride/Tyson).

I think Brewster would get destroyed by someone like Lewis, if he were still around.

brewster is not the best heavy out there, i can see a few good boxers, out boxing him, he's had too many poor performances against guys who are not even in the top 10-15.

Brewster is as much of a "champion" as Vitali is in this alphabet soup of champions. Not acknowledging this is nuthugging.

Read again... I'm not even saying Brewster's the best, I'm saying that in this ****house era of heavyweight boxing he's the one with the biggest claim to the title thus far in 2005.

Byrd's been inactive the longest... Vitali has fought as champ for ONE fight and that was last December, and the only other heavy to try out his title lost it... then got it back by bureaucracy

There is no heavyweight champion until at least two belts are unified. Klitschko is definitely NOT the champion, although he is probably the best.

Diego, I find myself in the odd position of agreeing with you this weekend.

I must say, Vitali's claim to the throne slips with every passing week that he doesn't defend his belt. As you say, he's probably got the most talent, but he has to use it...
