Earlier this morning, Zab Judah spoke to reporters in a brief conference call to discuss his upcoming fight on July 16 as well as his future.
Though his next fight against Jose Armando Santa Cruz will be contested at 143 pounds, Judah (38-6, 26 KOs) maintains that he's a junior welterweight and will indeed make the 140-pound limit in future fights. When pressed about the reasoning he's not making 140 for this fight, Judah joked, "those extra 3 pounds are comfort; like a comfy pillow," then reiterated that he'd lose the extra pounds if a title was at stake.
Judah said he's been in the gym everyday preparing for the fight and mentioned that he's sparred with former The Contender alumn, Ishe Smith.
As it relates to future fights, he mentioned Amir Khan, Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander as fighters he'd like to compete against. When asked specifically about Alexander, Judah said he'd love a fight against him in St. Louis.
"Super" Judah, also talked about his lengthy venture into the welterweight division, where he became the undisputed champ by beating Cory Spinks. "147 [pounds] was a pot of gold for me; that's all it was," said Judah when talking about the move up in weight. He admitted that given his speed and power, he was able to get away with fighting in a higher division for some time but that he's a natural 140-pounder and intends in competing there.
"I'm campaigning at 140 pounds. I don't want to hear about 147 anymore," proclaimed Judah.
The former two-division champ also acknowledged the Cotto-Foreman bout from last week and said he was pleased to see the turnout from the fans and hopes to do the same at some point.
When asked about his return to former promoter Main Events, Judah stated that "everything comes full circle, and the timing was right."
