what he's saying is true. james is a great boxer but in mma there's a lot more things u need to do. there's kicks, gay wrestiling, jiu jitsu, knees, elbows, ground and pound. it's not just punching. same thing goes if ur an mma guy u can't just be a pure boxer in month's time cuz ur more used to taking people down and throwing kicks at them.

But I just don't see how in less than a year he's gonna learn how to sprawl against the likes of Randy Couture (even in his 40s). Toney's got a puncher's chance in the UFC, but that is about all.

I think a really good Kick Boxer or Mu Thai Fighter could stand on even terms with Tony. It's not like Tony really knows how to defend elbows and kicks either.

What gave Mercer the chance to win is exactly the same chance people are giving Toney, a puncher's chance. Tim Sylvia has no ground game whatsoever and has been beaten by top and mid card fighters. Guys like Randy Couture (who beat the **** out of Tim Sylvia) and Brock Lesnar will take Toney down without hesitation. If they choose to stand with Toney, that's on them, but highly doubt they'll go down that route. They're not naive to Toney's Boxing skills.
