Promoter Lou DiBella is getting more than a bit antsy and anxious over the status regarding middleweight champion, Sergio Martinez, who as of yet, still doesn't have a date for him on HBO or a fight going into the immediate future. I was told that DiBella met with HBO last week and gave them a list of nine fighters they would face immediately.
The list: Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, Shane Mosley, Paul Williams, Kermit Cintron, Vanes Martirosyan, Alfredo Angulo, Felix Sturm and Sergio Mora.
Just my opinion, out of those names, I’d like to see the Williams rematch, followed by Angulo and Margarito. As for the most realistic or makeable fight, that might be Cintron( since both are handled by DiBella Entertainment) but I’m not sure if HBO wants Cintron back on their airwaves after his last appearance on the network.
- Hearing that it looks more and more like Yuriorkis Gamboa will take on Orlando Salido in a featherweight unification bout on July 24th on HBO’s ’Boxing After Dark’. Salido, doesn’t have a great record( 34-10) but he’s a heavy-handed tough guy, and Gamboa has tasted the canvas before. The name of Jorge Solis has also been brought up for Gamboa, but I like the Salido match-up much more. Opening up that broadcast might be a lightweight hook-up between unbeatens Brandon Rios and Anthony Peterson, I really think this could be a good one.
- The Scottrade Center in St. Louis has landed the August 7th show from Don King that features Devon Alexander defending his jr. welterweight belts against Andreas Kotelnink and IBF lt. heavyweight titlist, Tavoris Cloud defending against the always rugged Glen Johnson. This show will be televised by HBO.
- It’s not a done deal, but the Bell Center in Montreal is very interested in hosting the ’Super Six’ fight between Arthur Abraham and Carl Froch on Sept, 18th.
- ’the Latin Snake’ Sergio Mora returns on July 23rd on Telefutura versus JC Candelo as the headliner on Telefutura at the Pechanga Resort and Casino.( June 8th, 2:20 pm, Pacific)
