It really really hurt me when Cotto lost to Margarito. It was a sad night for me.
I had been sipping on presidentes in my backyard anticipating the fight , with high hopes , knowing margarito was a monster not to be taken for granted.
As the first round ended , I noticed Cotto's relentless attack was not there. He was being very accurate , but at the same time , he would not capitalize on what I call face first warrior style , or saco de papas style. Margarito was getting hit at will , but Cotto would step back. It really caught my attention. The secong round ended and I saw the same thing. The third round ended , and I saw noticed Cotto was trying to catch his breathe at an alarming rate(considering it was only the third). And I told my dad and my grandfather , if Cotto keeps this up , he will only get tired. And it will not benefit him. Fourth and fifth round went by. And cotto was still dominating , but Margaritos attack was getting sharper. And from watching boxing for so long and following Cotto for so long , knowing that wasnt his style , noticing he was getting tired , I accepted in my heart that his first lost was close.
My dad wouldnt believe me , "are you crazy , look at the way his landing" he told me. My grandfather noticed in the seventh , and said it himself. Hes not going to finish. And Cotto lost.
Next day at work , I had to put up with a fat chicano , who happened to be a casual fan , bragging about the win. I congratulated him , (he was my "boy" or co-worker , we were cool) So I had that STFU smile and leave me alone with my sadness kind of attitude.
So months went by , not really talking to anybody about boxing. ( I had not found this site yet) Just watching HBO , Telefutura , Telemundo , and some PPV fights. Not really following it that close.
Then I found this great site. Full of great news and updates. Including videos , photos , a big forum , and a wide variety of fans. And it was always evident for me , he big Puerto Rico vs Mexico rivalry. I always thought mexicans werent really into boxing as much as us. I thought they were more into soccer. But then I witnesses all the wars between , margarito fans and Cotto fans. Margarito fans claiming he owns Cotto , and a few others calling him shot. And since being in the states and living among other latins and other people , I have witnessed a special kind if racism if you can call it that. Its really small , but at the same time , very very alive and strong. Where Puerto Ricans are not considered Latinos because of the status of the island. Ironic really and hypocrite at the same time for many reasons , but I wont get into that here.
So then I fall into that "war" that was and still takes place in this forum between Ricans and mexicans. And for the most part it comes from both sides and is fun , and it might be playing sometimes , but its the biggest rivalry in boxing. And not to be taken lightly. By either side.
But after threads and threads , and post after post , and trolling comments.
This is how I want to make public , that I have accepted Cottos loss. And I want to point out why Margarito , even tho he took the "W". He will never be as great as Cotto.
Cotto has taken on all challenges. hard fight , after hard fight. Some claim he won vacant belts , but better winning them by fighting than not. He has a great resume , he beat convincingly good , and great fighters. Always handled himself like a gentleman never giving any excuses , and always thinking about the next challenge. He is a 4 time world champion , and a 3 division champ. Something that margarito and his fans can chew on. He is still fighting in the U.S , making millions , and always moving on to better and bigger things. He is by far more respected by the neutral fans than Margarito is. His pass into the HOF is by far more earned than Margaritos. His shoes have just entered the BASEBALL HOF. Also something for Margarito and his fans to chew on. He will become a big promoter one day , probably the biggest former fighter/promoter to ever come out of Puerto Rico.
And Even tho Margarito won , He still got owned by others , and could not beat the guy Cotto beat. Another HOF, Shane mosley.
And in conclusion , Margaritos biography , when written will fall too short in comparison to Cottos. And that is how I will remember it. Always will be overshadowed by the big plster. And that is how Margarito to me , is just a disgrace to mexican boxing , to boxing in general , to mexican fans that support him , and why he will never be as big and as respected as Miguel Junito Cotto.
And this is how I end my debates on Miguel and Antonio forever.
