Knee surgery for Foreman after Yankee Stadium defeat

Yuri Foreman, who lost his WBA super welterweight title on Saturday when he was stopped in the ninth round by Miguel Cotto, needs surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee, his handlers said on Monday.

Foreman was examined in New York on Monday and found to have a torn meniscus and a stretched ligament. There was no immediate word on how long he would be sidelined.

The Belarussian-born Israeli, who now lives in New York and is also studying to be a rabbi, suffered his first professional defeat after 28 wins in the fight at Yankee Stadium.

His knee gave out on him twice during the seventh round and once in the eighth, forcing him to the canvas three times and restricting his movement.

After a thudding Cotto left hook to the ribs early in the ninth knocked him down, the referee waved an end to the bout.

he only has cartilage damage, the ligaments were stretched but not torn, and that's good. Arthroscopic surgery on cartilage can even be done on outpatient basis, or at worse, just an overnight stay BEFORE the surgery. Patients normally walk out same day of the surgery. Rehab starts 1-2 weeks after surgery. So he should be fine in a month. He can start light to moderate exercise after the 1st month.
