What Makes a fighter have a great defense???

i see everyone say how Winky's defense is so great and perfect, but what does he really do??? He just covers his face most of the time and doesnt take any chances. I mean it works great for him but i dont see how he has a great defense. Cant everyone do the same thing ?? Just cover your face like he did??

When i think of a great defensive fighter i think of a guy who can block parry and slip punches like Roy Jones, Mayweather , Leonard and oscar in their prime did. I dont think a guy who just puts his hands up and covers himself up should be said they have a great defense, but if thats all he does then he should be just called a DEFENSIVE fighter. If that makes any sence, whats your opinion

yeah exactly! I think that makes a fighter have a great defense. Not a guy who covers his face all night

wright has a great defence when his oppenets throw punchs they dont score they hit his arms, thats defensive boxing my friend its no diff then wat those guys do u mentioned, punches miss them yes and those punchs dont score, wright blocks the pucnhs with his arms so they dont score, others make punchs hit air wright makes them bounce off his arms, it gets the job done

Go to your local boxing gym, call out some of the tougher looking kids there, and give your Winky Wright impersonation a try. Tell me how it goes.

what Wright does is not something everyone can do

he has built the mentality for it...he is willing to accept that punches are going to land on his glove and the possiblity of penetrating his defense...he also has the conditioning and arm strength to keep his hands up in that position for 12 rounds...Lennox Lewis would NOT be able to keep his hands up that long...I think he defense SHOULD be taken seriously...he DOES move...he puts his arms at a specific position where his face AND body are blocked...to keep your hands up and keep them tight from being pushed off and being broken through, you need arm strength which he obviously has...

so I don't think it is something ANYBODY can do...not successfully anyway...his defense is just not as flashy

in the end, good defense is about not being hit a lot and he doesn't get hit a lot...also keep in mind that he DOES punch...he does win the rounds he defends himself in...it is not like Sam Hill vs Jermain Taylor where Sam Hill went into defense mode all night...that is an example of someone who can just do it without getting hit much...difference is that Winky fights back and gets hit less...
