I think the reason people suggest he is being rude is because his reaction to being called arrogant is to play the race card. That's pretty weak for a guy with such a self-proclaimed great intellect. His God-fearing argument doesn't hold that much water, so why debate it on merit. Assert it, and respond to any challenge by changing topic to race, where (given the context of the era) he was always going to be right.
