Well, the fight was close and he clearly got fouled, so acting or not Roy deserved the DQ. Jones then settled things in the rematch by KO'ing Griffin in one round.

Griffin was always a very smart boxer, but physically he wasn't very talented, being a short light heavyweight at 5'7 without much speed or power, and he wasn't very durable either. He got by with sheer boxing skill.

Respectable fighter, who did give Jones a headache for 10 rounds and somehow managed to score two wins over James Toney. I didn't think he won either of those fights though, sound or not, but he did prove that skill-wise he was up there.

The Michalczewski stoppage was odd but Dariusz would have probably proven to be too strong over the distance anyway despite being outboxed for 4 rounds.

I think the difference between fights 1 & 2 between Griffin and Jones is that in the first fight, Jones tried to outsmart and outbox Griffin, while in fight 2 he simply overwhelmed him with his speed and power. Griffin couldn't really hurt Jones, nor did he have the handspeed to match Jones's or the chin to take it.

you make alot of sense, good analyses, jones even in the second fight got countered beautifully by griffin, but in the end the guy didn't have the speed or the power to make much of a difference, and it's alot to ask someone to avoid so many punches from one of the fastest fighters ever, jones was just raining the power on him

          Misleading title.

          Great read.

Doesn't matter if you a great fighter or a bum, or fighting just enough to put food on the table, we are all human, that's what I forget sometimes.

Montell just seems happy to get the respect from other fighters.

          Makes me smile

he still can't let go of the fact that the knockdown was legit, and the right hand that put him on ***** street was a legal punch...i see he conveniently left out the fact that he was fouling jones all night, and got hit on one knee in response to his constant fouling imo...

in the rematch i think jones just had his style figured out, and went in there and overwhelmed him with powershots...would'nt have made a difference if montell was dry or sweated up before the fight...it would have went down the same way, maybe a round or two later...lol

i also thought he fought james toney even in the first fight, and got a gift decision in the rematch....

more like you were getting your ass whipped but you got hit while you were down...then in the rematch you got KTFO in the 1st round...

He's right though in a sense, he has a win over a version of Roy Jones no one else has a win over. He's the only guy with a win over a prime Roy Jones!

Still, no one for a minute actually thinks he "beat" Roy.

griffin is such a *****: "i dont want to make any excuses, i mean the fight was years ago.." and he follows up with another excuse

by this article montell griffin hasnt lost a fight in his life and the one fight he may feel he maybe lost (to johnson) he lost because he overtrained

griffin by his own admission would declare himself the most robbed fighter in the history of the sport

people who think this guy deserves any kind of respect should read the whole article

You ask any fighter and they'll always come up with an excuse. Doesn't mean they don't deserve respect. Griffin was a skilled boxer who spent decades in the sport. That's respectable.

I was 13 when that fight happened me and brother watched that ****, and we was talking **** bout Montell, and guess what I still talk **** bout him. He thought he did something against Roy in that first fight, he thought he really was the champ. That second fight showed who waz who, what waz what. He never asked for a rematch, he just came with excuses.

But he should want respect from the fans, he should want props from the fans. Because the fans are the ones that will keep his name alive, long after he is gone. I will give him respect, he was man enough to get in the with a PRIME Roy Jones Jr, twice knowing damn well Roy was pissed. Other than that he still *****.
