I believe that floyd is like the 140 lb version of roy jones (in his prime). Floyd has better stand-in-the-pocket defense, and roy jones had flashier offense and better overall athletic ability (see roy jones vs. hopkins, and hopkins had more professional fights going into that fight than roy jones). Floyd could probably fight effectively to a very old age because his defensive style is so slick. It's better than james toney's defense.

Floyd is mainly technically superior in terms of basic boxing ability...Jones stood out mainly because he had more personality in his offense...Floyd is more direct and "gets the job done"...Roy spent more time trying to be flashy than getting the job done...but he DID get the job done -
I pretty much agree with you on all of your points. Only thing is Im still not sure about the better defense bewteen Floyd or Toney.Originally posted by simeraksouI believe that floyd is like the 140 lb version of roy jones (in his prime). I think the only thing Roy Jones had on Floyd was how fluid he was and how calm he seemed, Floyd sometimes seems a little more tense, but he has waaaaaaay better defense than Roy.Comment

Well if we're only talking about the shoulder roll and stuff like that, I'd say Toney, but if we're talking about all around defensive (picking shots off, footwork, headmovement, etc.) I'd say Mayweather.Originally posted by sisforshaqI pretty much agree with you on all of your points. Defintley, Roys defense was mainly his speed, Floyds defense is a combo of his speed and great techinal defense. Best defense I have seen since (not including Toney and Winky) since Sweet POriginally posted by jack_the_rippuhI think the only thing Roy Jones had on Floyd was how fluid he was and how calm he seemed, Floyd sometimes seems a little more tense, but he has waaaaaaay better defense than Roy.Comment

the funny thing is both of their parents were Boxing junikies and were their managers buth when RJJ and FMJ both reach a ceirtain point in their carrer they both fired them, and didnt talk to them, i think Roy is talking to his dad nowComment

Floyd has a twitchier approach to his offense and defense
Jones has a more fluid approach to his offense and defense
Toney has a more "relaxed" approach to his offense and defense
Toney gets hit more often, but still not clean...Roy Jones depended on his reflexes completely in not getting hit to the head or body...Floyd purposely will take it to the body and arms to avoid head shots...Toney mainly blocks head shots...Comment

I agree - a lot of people seem to think that Floyd's career will take a downturn earlier than other fighters because his main weapon - his speed - will be the first thing to go. But his defensive slickness is going to add years to his longevity - he doesn't just rely on being able to pull his head back quicker than the other guy can punch. Defensively PBF is streets ahead of Roy - but some of the single shots Jones could pull off were far more devastating than anything Floyd has doneOriginally posted by simeraksouFloyd could probably fight effectively to a very old age because his defensive style is so slick. Good point, I've never seen someone look more they're just standing around waiting for a bus in the ring than Roy...his composure was phenomenal. Floyd though seems so wound-up even outside the ring that I don't think he'd be able to squash his jumpiness inside of it, though he certainly makes it work for him.Originally posted by jack_the_rippuhI think the only thing Roy Jones had on Floyd was how fluid he was and how calm he seemed, Floyd sometimes seems a little more tense, but he has waaaaaaay better defense than Roy.Comment
