You might aswell ask who invented the jab, or the peek-a-boo stance. It's something that developed/evolved over time.

Good point, although I think there is an actual answer for the fighter who invented the jab.

To the Ts if you at George Benton, Archie Moore, Joe Walcott you can see them using some variation of the technique

Jersey Joe Walcott kind of used it, is somewhat different from what Mayweather and Toney use though.

I think Toney is the first fighter to really use the style that you are thinking of. The guys saying Walcott or Moore used it, they probably did it but not to an effective style. Think Toney was the first to really put it in an effective style and Mayweather has somewhat perfected it. Think a lot of fighters that can use it, will use it now because it is a good style to use.

              c'mon now guys....that's ridiculous......

it originated in the mid-west......my guess is philly.....since it is often called a philly shell.....or otherwise Michigan would be a good bet too..........it's obviously taught by the "old school legendary trainers" as floyd puts it in Michigan....you can actually see Roger Mayweather using it to great effect in his fight with Vinny Paz...in a similar, albeit less polished way to Floyd Jr..........it was taught to guys like Toney, Roger Mayweather, Big Floyd, Little Floyd etc....it's no coincidence the 2 current guys who use it are both from Michigan.......

check hooks, pull counters and all that stuff that requires great skills to execute is taught in the mid-west.......

Bill Miller taught him how to use it, also he studied the techniques of a lot of the old school fighters, as seen in this vid

Think this is correct but change Archie Moore for Ezzard Charles,
(Archie Moore had the / created the awkward cross arm defence which he used).

Toney has stated numerous times that he learned from studying the old timers, Jersey Joe and Ezzard in particular, my guess is that he took their styles and changed them to make his own, more effective shoulder roll.
