Aware of his No. 1 fighter’s new role, Freddie Roach said he is willing to leave behind the familiar confines of the Wild Card in Hollywood as long as Manny Pacquiao gets ample guidance under his watch in preparation for a being proposed fight for Nov. 13.
“No problem with that,” said Roach over the weekend from the fabled sweat shop on Vine Street, several blocks from where celebrities gather to attend premiers and gala affairs.
It’s no surprise that Roach is amenable to coming over to the Philippines since he has actually done it twice – in 2007 for a fight against Marco Antonio Barrera – and in 2009 versus Miguel Cotto.
And since Pacquiao can no longer have the luxury of being outside the country most of the time because of his being elected to the Philippine congress, Roach is making the supreme sacrifice again of leaving Tinseltown.
Pacquiao said last week that if and when he fights again, he will have no choice but to set up training camp in the country – not in Baguio as being perceived – but in Metro Manila.
“There are lots of places here where I can do my morning roadwork and there are countless gyms too that can host my afternoon training,” said Pacquiao, who plans to attend sessions in the morning until afternoon before heading to the gym.
Pacquiao’s people, led by Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum, are moving heaven and earth to reach an accord with representatives of Floyd Mayweather for a megabuck matchup that is being peddled for either Las Vegas or Dallas.
Pacquiao has taken a bold step, revealing to this paper last week that he has agreed to be tested to as close to 14 days before the scheduled fight so that a major roadblock in the negotiations can be hurdled.
Roach said he is at ease with Pacquiao’s 14-day stance.
