I can't speak for Europeans but I was stationed in Korea when I was in the army. And for linguistic reasons we had what were called Katusas attached to each platoon and it seemed that culturally they did not have the same hangups as Westerners do with men being affectionate with each other. At first I thought they were all gay but realized they were in fact not and simply did not have same issues as we do.
