Comments Thread For: Vazquez and Marquez: Saving Boxing One War at a Time

By Thomas Gerbasi - There will be no 24/7 countdowns for Israel Vazquez. No bling, no record labels, no promotional companies, no high-profile endorsement deals and few, if any, magazine covers. He probably won’t complain either, as complaining isn’t a part of the Warrior’s Code.

But for all the attention paid to the high-profile likes of Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Ricky Hatton, and Oscar De La Hoya, the Mexico City native, along with his countryman and partner in fistic crime for the last three years, Rafael Marquez, can rest easy at night knowing that they, in fact, were the ones who “saved” boxing.

Sure, they don’t trash talk with the glib ease of a “Money” Mayweather, don’t run for political office like Pacquiao, enjoy the complete adulation of a nation like Hatton, or have the matinee idol looks and crossover appeal of the sport’s mainstream savior, De La Hoya, but Vazquez and Marquez have made it safe to say that you’re still a boxing fan. On three special nights in 2007 and 2008, they did what most claim to do but few live up to – they “left it all” in the ring. [Click Here To Read More]

If anybody deserves to take home 40 million dollar paydays, it's these two warriors.

I know it isnt popular to say, but I have mixed feelings about this fight. These two have just taken such a beating in the last fights, and I dont know that I want to see them damage each other again. Especially since I think Vazquez is just too big and strong for Marquez. But I will watch knowing we will get an amazing fight, and hoping that neither guy takes too many clean shots.

I'll say! I'm just glad they're getting at least this one big pay, with hopefully a few more big ones before they retire.

Man, I can't wait to see what goes down with this one. I have a feeling it will be different. More of a chess match, but still a war. The type of fight I like most. An aggressive, highly skilled, chess match.

Great article, and I agree 100% that if anyone has been saving boxing recently, it's fighters like these two. Big, hard fights, better than anything you'll see in the so called 'superfights' and for little money or fame. They deserve it more than anyone, but they still do it anyway.

these guys are a throwback to boxing's golden age, imagine if a pacquiao mayweather fight is even half as good as one of the three.
