How are things going Kevin, what’s good? Talk to us about your thoughts on this past weekend’s fights.
KC- Things are going good, thanks for asking. As far as the fights go, well I felt that Khan looked very good and Victor looked good also. Question I have for you though is this, were both of those fights competitive to you?
Well I guess the Khan/Malignaggi fight sort of did early on, at least for the first 3 or 4 rounds. After that it was all Khan, the early rounds were somewhat close but I would have to say that they were Khan rounds. The Ortiz/Campbell fight wasn’t close at all.
KC- Now are these the type of fights that you want to see? These one sided fights.
In all honesty, I never would have guessed that Khan would dominate Paulie the way he did. I see where you are going with this and that’s the reason why I’m calling you today because I respect and love the fact that Devon Alexander is calling out Timothy Bradley. Alexander/Bradley is the fight that needs to happen.
KC- I feel that HBO and these other networks owe it to the fighters and the fans to put together competitive fights. As you touched on before, Devon is a throwback, aint no fear in Devon. Devon wants to make the big fights happen, it’s just that others just will not step up to the plate.
By others, do you mean Maidana? Or Bradley? In Bradley’s case, at least Bradley wants to get it on with Maidana but it’s Maidana who keeps backing out.
KC- Look, I’ll say this to you. Golden Boy aint trying to put in Ortiz with Devon, or Maidana with Devon, or Khan with Devon. The networks and the powers that be would much rather want to see the two brothers Devon and Bradley to get it on alot sooner than later. Look man, I’m just being real with you.
I see what you are saying and I agree. Let me tell you though that 3 or 4 years ago I mentioned to my brother that I can see Ortiz/Alexander face off in a huge De La Hoya/Mayweather Jr. type of fight in the future. In saying that, If you think about it, it makes no gain in trying to make that happen now. I mean why fight Victor now when he aint De La Hoya yet and Devon aint Floyd yet?
KC- Exactly, that’s what I’m saying. They would rather have two brothers knock each other off before they allow them to face an Ortiz, Maidana, or a Khan.
End of the day, you got to take a shorter gain to get to the bigger drop later.
KC- Yes, which is why we really got no problem at all taking Bradley or any other fighter for that matter. It kills me when a few months ago Bradley was trying to call out Mayweather and Pacquiao. Are you serious? Come on now, who has Bradley really beaten to make him think that he deserves to face any of those guys? Holt? Witter? Witter, who Devon made quit by the way. Peterson? I mean first face Devon and unify titles at 140 before you try to call out the big names.
Sounds to me that a tourney at 140 is what is needed here. Your thoughts?
KC- That would be something. We can have one and call it the 140 pound showdown. Khan vs. Maidana or Khan vs. Ortiz, and Bradley/Alexander and then the winners of each fight meet in a showdown for the right to be called king of the 140 pound division. That is why I respect what Showtime is doing with the super 6 tournament. Every fight in that tournament is a great fight, that’s what we need.
So it looks like Bradley will end up facing Abregu in July, so what’s the deal with Devon? It’s looking more and more that Devon is now boxing’s most feared fighter. Paul Williams used to have that title, but ever since Sergio Martinez iced him, Paul don’t look so scary anymore. Do you feel that maybe Devon knocking out Urango worked against him?
KC- I hope that it didn’t work against him, but you never know. I mean not many believed that Devon would stop Urango. Berto couldn’t even stop Urango. Everyone kept saying to watch out for Urango’s power, I kept saying, **** Urango better watch out for Devon’s power! I’m gonna let you go with this. Bradley has a date in July, and Devon has a date on August 7th. After August 7th, we are looking at Bradley, Khan, Maidana, or Marquez. Any one of those can get it.
Before you get going, do you have any names that you guys are looking at for Devon for his August date?
KC- The 2 names that are being talked about are, Andreas Kotelnik and Lucas Matthysse. Kotelnik is the only fighter to defeat Maidana, and Matthysse just beat Vivian Harris. Glen Johnson vs. Tavoris Cloud will also be on the card. After August 7th, Khan, Bradley, Maidana, Marquez, we are coming for you.
