I think it would help Katsidis out if he had a trainer like Roach. But then again it seems like Katsidis gets along alot with his trainer that he currently has... Would change be better or worse?
If Katsidis had a trainer like Freddie Roach, would he be the next Manny Pacquiao?

Im a big fan of The Great but i dont think hes got the natural boxing potential that Roach seems to be able to mold. He's a fighter and a warrior and a damn good one too so i think a change would be worse. -

I rate Roach as a match maker and strategist for a given fight but from what I have seen I don't rate his ability to fix technical faults in a fighter. The evidence does not support his reputation.
Katsidis is an honest pressure fighter that will fight anyone put in front of him. Roach is a cherry picker looking for opponents that suit his fighters. There is also a lot of hype and bull**** about him. Katsidis comes over as a straight forward good bloke. It seems to me they would not gell. Katsidis has a Tyson type style. Atlas would be a better coach for him IMO and they may have better chemistry also.Comment

I know, that could be a good thing as the attention would be more concentrated as it was when he coached Tyson. Atlas would not waste time with a lot of fighters but in Katsidis he has someone that fits his mould.Comment

We all know Katsidis's strong points, Maybe someone like Roach would have worked on his weaknesses rather than his strong points which it seems his trainer are working on, Katsidis is very exciting to watch but he lacks too many basic for my liking, any top boxer that gets beat by him really need to do more gym work.Comment

If he ditched Smith now and replaced him with Roach, we'd see a repeat of Hatton being trained by Mayweather Sr. It just doesn't work. A change of trainer has to be subtle enough so as to not throw the fighter off their style completely - i.e. when Wlad changed from Sdunek to Steward, it wasn't an extreme change but rather just enough to fix a few technical flaws in his style and make him utilise his height better. He still fights pretty much the same.
Katsidis has always fought the way he has, so it wouldn't make sense to change it up now. Everyone knows him for the blood n' guts style, and it's pretty obvious that he himself lives by that mentality. I can't imagine him ever boxing his way to a clever points win, or actively avoiding a close quarters scrap. The fans wouldn't get it, and he'd be annoyed by it (the Diaz fight being a good example of how frustrated he becomes if he tries to box with his opponent).
At the very least he's done something right by tightening up his guard and taking the bobbing/weaving to an extreme level. Whilst the jab is still unfortunately absent, he'll always be able to give guys trouble with the way he works his way in using such relentless upper body movement. It's far better than Hatton back in the day with his total lack of head movement and hands held at chest level.
