They just need to get merchant to talk faster and not get wasted before he goes on camera. He actually knows his stuff he is just not representable on screen. He would be a good Harold Lederman type guy. Off camera analysis.

Larry Merchant is a commentator who I can't live with, but can't live without.
He has given us so many unforgettable quotes, didn't sacrifice substance for tact, and always spoke his mind. I am reminded of the Cotto-Corley fight, when both Lampley and Steward were totally oblivious to the injustice that was being done to Demarcus Corley, and Larry Merchant proclaimed that the premature stoppage was "a disgrace."
On the other hand, he has been very disrespectful to fighters, very similar to the way that Jim Gray of Showtime believe fighters are brainless scum and that he can talk to them anyway he feels. In the post fight interview with Vernon Forrest following his mauling of previously undefeated Shane Mosley, he cut Forrest off when he was thanking his family.
While maybe a shift of personnel would be refreshing to some, who could replace the perfect chemistry of Lampley and Merchant?

I don't think anyone on the team likes him, either. They all seem to be annoyed by him. That could just be because I hate him, though.

Originally posted by BadMagickI wouldn't even agree with that. The reason being that I find he takes his favorite fighter, and raises them up on to a pedastal. He's the most biased guy on the show. Letterman does a good job, too. I disagree with him a lot, but at least he's not a drunken moron.

Merchant is just fine, people are mad at him because he said some bad things about Tyson...guess you hate Teddy Atlas too right?
Roy Jones is the one who needs to go from the telecast...the guy is so hung up on his glory days he reminds me of me now that I am maried recalling my college days...
I think Merchant is the one guy on the braodcast that is the least likely to jump on a particular fighters wagon during the fight. Lampley is at the controls and I love Lamps but he starts rding a guy almost every fight and he starts saying his boy is landing when he really isn't. Jones goes with the black fighter whoever that might be and then you have devils advocate Lary Merchant.
So what if he is drunk, I would love to be commentating on HBO ****faced...quit being jealous-you may hate him but I bet you listen to his final words...they are entertaining weather you agree or disagree.

Your accusing Merchant of that...you need to watch more telecasts...your boy Roy will take any fighter that is Black and ride his ass and Lampley gets to call the fight and he misses a ton and it is usually for one fighter benefit...he is the vopice...Merchants is a distance 3rd in terms of riding a fighter jock compared to Roy and Lampley.

You have to consider were he would go after hbo. I doubt the guy is married and I doubt he is financially stable without that job. He does really know his stuff though so although id rather see him gone I dont mind his presence. And yes lampley says the guy landed a punch when it was actually the opposite guy. He is a good punch by punch guy overall tho.

Jones is there to give insight on what happens in the ring. Lampley is there for punch by punch commentary.
Merchant is there to give his "expert opinion" on the fight.
Letterman is the scorecard man.
