The legendary Roy Jones Jr hosted this years Southern Association boxing tournament. Roy's historic boxing career speaks for itself, but when a legend gives back to the youth of the sport it goes beyond measure. The tournament was held in Pensacola, Florida and young fighters from Louisiana to Florida all had their chance to fight in front of a legend. After each bout the participants were awarded a trophy hand delivered by Roy himself!
Stan Nichols, the President of USA Boxing's Southern Association had this to say about Roy's generosity, " It's quite an honor for a legend like Roy Jones Jr to give back to the kids like this. The smiles on each participants face were priceless." Jones, who recently came up short against Bernard Hopkins had a great time with the amateurs as well. Nichols added, "Roy really seemed like he was having a great time. He was mobbed by the kids, each wanting a picture or an autograph, and Roy was happy to do it."
The sport of boxing desperately needs to support the amateur program. There needs to be more professional fighters that have made a lot of money giving back to the sport. If more people like Roy Jones Jr would give back to the amateur program it would improve dramatically.
8CountNews congratulates Roy Jones Jr for a job well done!
