I was at the Pacquiao-Clottey press conference in January, just ahead of the big featherweight card at The Garden with Gamboa and Juanma. I saw Lou Dibella, Malignaggi's promoter, and we spoke informally about how messed up it is that Malignaggi has to be an opponent to get on TV.
I made a suggestion about fighting Amir Khan, since Malignaggi first became interested in boxing because of Prince Naseem Hamed's entertaining performance against Kevin Kelley.
Dibella shrugs it off, says that making that fight was the highlight of his tenure as HBO Boxing's programming director but that Khan isn't the type of superstar Hamed was.
And now only a few months later, we're days away from the fight.
