A lot of greats are great because they learn how to box and then they develop their own style based on their strengths.
Fighters like
1. Shane Mosley
2. Paul Williams
3. Carlos Mayorga
4. Ricky Hatton
5. Roy Jones
Seem to drop the basics and go for broke every time and it makes them look sloppy when they are not successful.
Fighters like
1. Bernard Hopkins
2. Floyd Mayweather
3. Winky Wright
4. JMM
5. James Toney
All lived up to their full potential because they stuck to the basics
I'd argue that RJJ & SMM may have even better legacies had their fundamentals been more solid. Fighters who stick to the basics take less damage and age better imo.
On the other hand some boxers are better off as fighters.
Just an observation, what do you think ?
