Floyd Sticks To The Basics !!!

A lot of greats are great because they learn how to box and then they develop their own style based on their strengths.

    Fighters like

    1. Shane Mosley
    2. Paul Williams
    3. Carlos Mayorga
    4. Ricky Hatton
    5. Roy Jones

Seem to drop the basics and go for broke every time and it makes them look sloppy when they are not successful.

    Fighters like

    1. Bernard Hopkins
    2. Floyd Mayweather
    3. Winky Wright
    4. JMM
    5. James Toney

All lived up to their full potential because they stuck to the basics

I'd argue that RJJ & SMM may have even better legacies had their fundamentals been more solid. Fighters who stick to the basics take less damage and age better imo.

On the other hand some boxers are better off as fighters.

Just an observation, what do you think ?

Actually I would say Mayweather is one of the more unorthodox fighters out there. He can revert to the pure basics if he wants to, but his style is something quite different.

I think he mastered several styles of boxing. Everything he does is pretyy much technically sound. I think he wins do to the effectiveness of the proven science more so than going on faith and heart.

It looks like Floyd has an answer to everything because boxing has an answer to everything. Floyd is very b"by the book". The sad thing is so many people disregard what they learned in their first 5-10 years and end up simply "fighting".

what's crazy about a guy like Pac is that he was able to live off just his natural talent until his 3rd or 4th division. Then he realized that his physical advantages and natural ability were not enough and that he would have to add the fundamentals to his game which he did extremely successfully. Now you got a guy who can slug, he can swarm, he can counter, he can potshot, he can do it all and its IMO really quite amazing.

I can't think of any other fighter who can beat you in as many different ways as Pac can.
