Tyson quit and he quit bad. Anyone who actually watched the fight knows the truth.
McBride pushed him to the canvas and he just sat on his ass, as if waiting to be counted out (a la the Williams fight). It was without a doubt the weakest and most cowardly end to a career a former heavyweight champion has experienced. It may be the lamest moment in boxing history.
At least with Liston you can say that he had no chance of catching Ali and was receiving unnecesary punishment from a sharp, quick puncher. Tyson was hitting McBride with good bodyshots and could have won that fight. McBride was landing weak half-ass punches that wouldn't have KO'ed Tyson if he hit him for 15 rounds. Mike just decided it wasn't worth it, which is what happens in almost every situation when a boxer quits.
If you can defend Tyson for quitting that night, you can defend ANYONE in the history of the sport for doing the same. Either Tyson was a quitter or no fighter ever was. Choose a stance and stick with it because this Tyson nuthugging is nauseating.Comment

Because he wasn't hungry!
Mike Tyson is doing it JUST for the money, and it's the only way he can make lots of money, you expect him to continue to fight a fight where he's taking a beating?Comment

Also yes I would expect him to continue a fight if he were taking a beating (though he wasn't) as his purse in that fight was five MILLION dollars. You say he was motivated by money, well he was getting an awful lot of it to get in there with a talentless bum. All he had to do was take the fight a few more rounds and he would have eventually landed something halfway clean on McBride's brittle jaw and sent him off to la la land.
You cannot defend Tyson's actions. He behaved like an immature coward and let down many, many people just because he just didn't feel like fighting. He should have just called the fight off in that case, so people would have gotten their money back. Very unprofessional on his part.Comment

Originally posted by Kid AchillesWell I would hardly consider that a beating. Have you seen the fight yet? I had him ahead before the fouling as he was scoring with the harder, cleaner blows. He was beating McBride. Perhaps the tide was begining to turn, but he was NOT getting beat up in in there. Getting leaned on maybe, but taking a beating? No way.
