As the hours wind down to his long-awaited comeback, Antonio Margarito took some time out of his final preparations and spoke with Examiner.com. In the first part of this 2 part series, Margarito talks about his return to the ring, becoming a new fighter, his training for the fight, predictions for both fights on May 8th, and more.
Of course, what interview would be complete without Margarito's confident responses to a potential match-up with Manny Pacquiao.
Can you describe how your training went in preparation for your upcoming fight against Garcia?
Training went very well. Robert and I, as well as the rest of the team adapted very well. There were no issues with sparring, injuries, or weight.
What can the fans expect when you make your return to the ring on May 8th, and are you excited to get back into the ring?
I am very excited about getting back into the ring. It has been over a year and I am anxious to hear the cheers of the crowd. I've worked very hard for the past two months, you are going to see a new fighter with a lot of hunger. A fighter with a mission, a mission to conqueror and destroy.
Any predictions on your fight with Garcia?
The only prediction is victory. I will win this fight.
In addition to Margarito vs. Cintron, Paul WIlliams will also be fighting Kermit CIntron on May 8th. Since you have been in the ring with both men, who do you think will win between Paul Williams and Kermit Cintron and why?
Paul Williams will dominate Kermit Cintron and knock him out in the middle rounds. Williams is too strong, too quick for the slow Cintron.
Any interest in a rematch with Sergio Martinez? His team has said they would love a rematch with you.
Sure, but this would be up to my promoter. I am aware of Martinez and his team mentioning my name, but first I have business with Robert Garcia to care of.
Why do you want to fight Manny Pacquiao?
Pacquiao is known as the "Mexican Assassin", but he hasn't faught this Mexican. This is a fight that my country people want. They know that I will beat Pacquiao and strip him of that title.
How do you think you match up against Manny?
My height, strength, pressure, and constant punching will give Manny problems.
