I was watching Corrales-Mayweather the other day and I remember Merchant mentioning that Corrales was a 6/5 favorite.

I bet if Mayweather had fought the extremely slow and unskilled Margarito people probably would have said he just wanted an easy fight and was ducking the champion, Baldomir. I mean, it isn't like Margarito would have been at all competitive against Mayweather.

you think baldomir and margarito are comparable? that's laughable.

1 guy is a journeymen who got lucky the linear champ(none of them would fight margarito btw) gasses in every fight and is 1-5 at welterweight. bingo he struck gold. then he beat a shot gatti and faded into bolivian losing just about every fight for the rest of his career.

the other is a guy who has been champ since 2002, was ranked in the top 3 since 2002, was ranked number 1 for over 3 years, has beaten such guys as andrew lewis, kermit cintron twice, joshua clottey, miguel cotto, and even fought paul williams to a close fight.

baldomir lost once and fell off the planet. not the sign of a very good fighter. margarito has been around for the last decade and even after taking some losses(santos debatable) still stuck around and fought the best time after time. that's staying power the sign of a good fighter.

baldomir is a slow plodder and even he managed to back floyd into the ropes a bunch of times in the fight. margarito may be slow but he's long, has more power, throws tons more punches and does not quit unless you hurt him(floyd can't). i doubt it would have been easy for mayweather. you can hang your hat on that victory over the super journeyman but i'd say a victory over margarito would have gone a lot farther.

and honestly who else could baldomir beat at welterweight to keep his linear status? the first real risk he would have took would have ended him. cotto, clottey, quintana, collazo, williams etc... his best bet would have been to remain stagnant like james braddock(original cinderella man) did after winning the heavyweight title until a huge fight 2 years later presented itself against joe louis. the man no one ever knocked out was then knocked out cold. luckily for baldomir a huge fight with mayweather came along much earlier and he cashed out.
