Do you think Joe Mesi could have been good?

he was a decent heavy weight but always undersized ...how do you see him doing against the cruiser weights of recent times

    haye
    adamek
    cunningham etc.

and also how do you see him against the heavy weights of today like arreola, the klits, povetkin, and chambers?

      EDGARG's opinion of Joe Mesi

Going by the 5-6 times I saw Joe Mesi box, including his Jirov and Barrett fights, as well as Williamson, I feel that offensively he was quite good, and also had a solid punch, but was very deficient in his defensive capability.

He relied on speed of foot, rather than body and head movement, in the latter of which he was rather deficient. His feet got him out of serious trouble alright, most of the time, but in the Jirov and Barrett fights, his defensive flaws showed up, as well as his inability to keep on top when his opponent put in a late spurt.

There's no doubt but that Mesi would have been seriously KO'd in both of those fights, and in the last round, if there had been another 30 seconds of time.

His brain injury was undoubtedly caused by absorbing late heavy head punishment in each of those fights, and being, to all intents and purposes knocked down several times, and rendered defenceless, to be only barely saved by the bell.

So,,,,my conclusion is that he was reasonably good, but seriously lacking, not in fighting spirit, but in toughness and battle seasoning.

I wish Joe Mesi was still boxing; he was fun to watch and was a classy guy outside of the ring...

I think he beats one or two top ten guys but would fall way short of winning a title...

I agree in a dogfight someone would've got him. Someone not that great.

The Jirov and Barret fights were precursors to his eventual doom when a guy would've probably took it to him earlier and had him in trouble and soon out.

He's Tommy Morrison with a better chin.
He could've won a belt or two but I don't see him being the number one guy.
Jirov drew the blueprint on how to pick him off once someone does that, it's very hard to comeback.

Jirov-Toney was one of the best fights I've ever seen.

Damn why did Jirov have to move up.

That weight was perfect for him.

He sure would have made for a spectacular knockout.

Tj Wilson kicked his ass at least a couple times in the amateurs. Joe wasn't anything too special.
