SPRINGFIELD — Springfield City Schools board members unanimously voted to name the gymnasium at Fulton Elementary School after boxing legend Davey Moore on Wednesday, May 5.
The board voted at a special meeting called to act on the recommendation by a seven-member naming committee to dedicate the gym to the memory of Moore, a Springfield native.
“We’re very pleased with the process,” said school board president Donna Picklesimer. “It went through and got community input, which was important to us. These names will live on long past any of us, and so it’s important to have good, solid community support.”
Dale Henry had been working on naming the gym after the featherweight great and represented Moore’s family in the effort.
“A special board meeting was in order because Davey Moore certainly was a special individual,” Henry said. “He was one who did his best to accomplish his goals. The whole community was proud of him.”
The gym’s dedication will take place at 10 a.m. May 22, followed by a cleanup of Davey Moore Park.
The crowd was light at Wednesday’s meeting, with about six people in attendance in addition to the board’s five members and Superintendent David Estrop.
Moore’s oldest daughter, Denise Moore, thanked the school board for their approval.
“I feel really good about it,” Denise Moore said.
Davey Moore was World Featherweight Boxing Champion from 1959 to 1963.
He died at the age of 30 from injuries sustained defending his title.
