Most of us may hate Margarito, most of us may despise Margarito. Most of us feel he shouldn't be given the opportunity to fight at this stage again. But we need to be realistic.
Margarito may even be a bigger draw now that he's back. He went from being famous to INFAMOUS. Bad publicity sells in this sport. Margarito WILL fight in the limelight again so why not let Sergio send him back to the gates of obscurity?
2 things we should consider.
Sergio Martinez's career
The State of Boxing
Its no secret that Martinez was badly mismanaged. After the Margarito loss, he traveled the world fighting C and D class opponents never reaching that level which could bring him big fights. He later fought Alex Bunema in a fight which I believe he was the underdog and defeated him in dominating fashion. Then, through an unfortunate incident which took Vernon Forrest's life, Martinez was given an opportunity by the WBC to become the title holder. So he went from Bunema to Cintron to Williams to Pavlik. There was nothing easy about that ascension.
A Margarito bout may lack credibility but where it lacks in validity, it makes up for in marketability. An impressive victory over Margarito would further improve Martinez's appeal and marketability. The sport is in a time where it needs more faces to carry the weight and who better than Martinez to do so? Sure, he's 36, but it doesn't look like he's slowing down anytime. And he's also a great ambassador to the sport. He has an exciting style which casual fans could appreciate so a fight with Margarito where he shows what he's about is great for the sport. People WILL be watching.
Yes, I want Williams/Martinez 2, too. And I'm 100% confident we will get that fight. Martinez already stated he wanted that fight. So it is going to happen. But williams fans need to be patient with this ****. Williams had an opportunity to take the Pavlik fight and be in the position Sergio is right now, but pride and politics didn't allow him to be. He could have ****** it up, taken the offer regardless of the terms, gotten rid of Pavlik and been in a better position.
But he didn't. So now Martinez is the one with the options. So I say Martinez should go for Margarito and then rematch Williams. Of course, only if Pavlik steps aside and Margarito doesn't get chosen for Pacquiao.
