Something that occured to me after Floyd exposed Shane- and I do believe, in my non-biased heart, that he is going to expose Manny, and badly- I started to think about the fallout that is almost certain to happen. It's when I started thinking, just from memory, how the rise of Pac has happened; and I want to take nothing away from Manny. I can tell he has work ethic. But honestly, alot of it is the media and boxing press saying it, and people hearing it enough. When Pac beats Clottey, you hear "this is the genius of Manny Pacquiao!!!" with such glee, you'd think these HBO commentators were 13 year old members of Pac's fan club. By contrast, Floyd "coasted to a points victory" over Shane. No criticism was directed towards Manny for winning against Clottey on "points", was it?
Pavlik was/is a hype job. Again, no disrespect. But he was exposed by Hopkins, and the world almost resents Hopkins for doing it. It's as if they want to say; "why do you have to do it? Let us have our happy fantasy here." But Pavlik is a hype job, because beating Gary Lockett does not make you a legend. Beating Hopkins or Martinez surely would have.
HBO and the boxing media at large embraces Pavlik, like they've embraced Pac. If you read The Ring- yes, The Ring- or Doug Fischer's columns, or basically anything else, you'll see unwarranted and tangible bias and unfair standards held to Floyd Mayweather. I think theres a few reasons for this, but one of the reasons never discussed, I realized tonight, and it's this:
Floyd Mayweather is self-made. The media, the journalists, HBO commentators, did not make him. Not like they made Pavlik, Pac, and whomever else. Floyd launched to real stardom without their help; apparently, even 24/7- which is the initial platform he used to promote himself- was his own idea, that he proposed to Richard Schaefer and HBO.
They have some resentment, because Floyd is self-made. People often resent and are jealous of self-made people, sometimes without ever realizing it. Look, Pac's career continues to rise... even though victories against the walking tree Clottey, a shot Hatton, a literally sick De La Hoya were not incredible by any means.. and HBO, The Ring, and so forth, can say, "this is what we've been saying all along!" As if this gives them some degree of credit in the making of his star. Not so with Floyd. He got there himself, whether you applaud or decry his efforts. Just something to think about.
