Hey, don't knock the guy for trying to get his money if that's HIS joint.
Even if he doesn't have an official copyright, all he needs is proof the recording belongs to him (i.e Pro Tools Sessions, ADATs, etc), and owning your publishing also helps out a lot (considering you get paid when your music is played on radio, TV as mechanical royalties).
I'm sure they'll just throw the kid a bone. But this does happen a lot more than people may think, but it's usually settled out of court.
If I were the kid, I'd sue the WWE too since they hosted the event and it was played under their umbrella and technically could owe him royalties on DVD sales of WM 24.
