  • Comments Thread For: Weekend Thoughts: Mayweather is Boxing’s Bobby Fischer

By Lee Groves - Last week I likened Floyd Mayweather Jr. to the wildly successful but take-no-risks David Simms of “Tin Cup” fame.

After watching him take apart Shane Mosley Saturday night, a parallel involving another sporting figure of the past leaped to mind – Bobby Fischer.

For those who are too youthful to know – or who don’t care about chess – Fischer is regarded by many as the greatest grandmaster that has yet lived (though Garry Kasparov would have something to say about that). [Click Here To Read More]

its no secrect Floyd has mastered the sport..he is the best boxer in the world right now..
he was pre-Mosley..but this win for many just proves what others have already known..
once he does the exact thing to Pac..people will really put him up there..(which I dont exactly agree)..but that will be the case..Floyd is the truth..that is all!

The one piece of argument actually wouldn't work to be honest. Nobody was asking for Cintron-Mayweather or even Williams_Mayweather back in '06 or '07. Margarito was still unknown outside of the boxing world and Shane Mosley was still nursing a toothache/vacationing. Cotto was just moving up to welterweight then and Mayweather was talking about how "green" and how "Cotto doesn't want it with me" during his training for the Gatti fight. Pacquiao wasn't around yet.

The problem is that everybody wanted Mayweather to fight these different fighters after he made the challenger that the public and boxing world wanted him to fight look like pure garbage. They wanted Mayweather-Judah once Floyd said he was moving up and Zab won the undisputed titles. They finally fought but Zab had lost (he's not a bum). Then he fought Baldomir who was the reigning welterweight champ and had come off two upsets. The world wanted DLH-PBF, they got it, then they wanted Ricky Hatton and his relentless pressure to break down PBF, they got that fight too.

It's in hindsight when critics say "why not this guy or that guy?" Nobody was gung-ho about Kermit Cintron, are you serious? If there's a baseball player named Paul Williams, sports fans knew him before they knew the boxer.

It's sad that somebody who is that good always gets punished for their success.

mayweather is good but fighters arent what they use too be if he had fought in the late 80s earlys 90s hed have his share of losses! the only fight i think that has a chance at beating mayweather rite now is "winky wright" cuz of his style other than that i see mayweather knockin out pac man, out boxing paul williams and knockin sergio martinez off his bike his other possible apponents.

                    NO! NO! NO!!!

                    I DISAGREE COMPLETELY!!!

Please don't disgrace Bobby Fischer's legacy by comparing Floyd to him! I can't see anything parallel with them both in terms of genius in their sport. Ali would be near the premise of a 'Bobby Fischer' in boxing. But not Floyd! Please!

Floyd is more of a Karpov or Petrosian type of fighter. Even as a person (except the loud mouth). Saying that Floyd is the Bobby Fischer of boxing is a complete disrespect to Fischer.

Fischer's genius is so much much more than any boxer's genius there is. I've studied most of his games and one could really see how great that man is in chess.

Let me give you guys an example:

Tigran Petrosian (a.k.a 'Iron' Petrosian) was known to be the toughest, greatest defensive and strategist, chess player the world has ever known. No one can win against him. His play was pure solid defense and long term strategy - even boring sometimes - but he can't lose.

Then Fischer came and tore him apart! After 10 games, the score was 6:2. Fischer with 6 wins and Petrosian with only 2.

Try to review their games here: http://www.thechessscene.com/games.php and you'll see how Fischer tore Petrosian's defense effortlessly.

The man was a god in chess.

Floyd, he's great but not the greatest... yet. Again, Floyd is more like Karpov and Petrosian - or even Kramnik in chess.

                    But not Fischer.
