Floyd Mayweather dominated Shane Mosley last night and in the eyes of many boxing fans moved to the top of the pound for pound listings.

Weighing up the welterweight wins of Pacquiao and Mayweather entirely objectively though, the deciding factor basically comes down to how you compare Juan Manuel Marquez and Joshua Clottey.

Fans of both Mayweather and Pacquiao will no doubt argue over whether Shane Mosley and Miguel Cotto is the better win. Realistically though they are virtually the same given the triangle their records form with Antonio Margarito.

There is a case to be made for Cotto being the better win because he beat Mosley and possibly fought Margarito under less than fair circumstances. I'm talking of course about the loaded gloves which many believe Margarito might have had against Cotto.

You could also make a case for Cotto being the lesser win because he was diminished from his beating from Margarito. Certainly after that loss he has never really looked as good as he did before, even if he was the top ranked fighter when Pacquiao beat him. But the fact remains that a case can be made for either being the better win.

Looking instead at their other recent matches then Marquez and Clottey must be weighed up. Both have wins over Hatton and De La Hoya and while you can argue that Pacquiao did better by finishing both, Mayweather probably fought the better versions of both, and his style doesn't lend itself to the knockout so much anyway, so again not much to separate them.

Comparing Marquez to Clottey is a slightly more tricky proposition though given the respective records of both. Clottey has always been a nearly man, always on the fringe but not quite good enough to win and keep a belt for any length of time. Marquez on the other hand is still the best lightweight in the world, but looked bloated and out of his depth at welterweight.

Although neither was much of a challenge for Mayweather and Pacquiao respectively, Clottey at least is a genuine welterweight, and struggled to remain active due to the fact that he was trying to survive against Pacquiao's whirlwind of aggression.

That aside though Pacquiao will most likely fight again before Mayweather and probably against another elite welterweight in Antonio Margarito. Unless Mayweather becomes more active and has two fights in the space of Pacquiao's one, then he will always remain in second place through being less active.

The only way Mayweather can truly take back the pound for pound throne he feels is still rightly his is to beat Pacquiao.
