Memories from Tommy Kimmons..Toney vs Jones

Here is a summary of some words from my uncle, former 350-9 number one ranked amatuer in the 70's and current professional referee, Tommy Kimmons. He is 47, and was talking about the James Toney-Roy Jones fight.

"I remember when Roy was going to fight Toney in 1994, and I knew I just had to see that fight, so I got a ticket and went out there. Now you gotta remember Toney was the best fighter in the world at that time. I knew Roy was going to whip him though," he says with a gleam in his eye and a big knowing smile. "I'll tell ya, I was walking through the lobby before the fight and Roy saw me and waived me over, I told him he was gonna win and put my hand on him like that (patting Roy on the back) and it felt like iron. There was no way he was going to lose."

We also talked about Cotto and Hatton...my uncle has reffed Hatton and Casamayor so we talked about their recent fights. We also talked to one of Roy's training camp buddies who told us how Roy was merely going through the motions while training for Glen Johnson, seeming as though he didn't even care to win. It was a good long and interesting talk.

I wonder if Roy had trained as hard as he did for Glen if he would have won. Hell knowing that he didn't train at all for Glen hardly maybe eh could win a rematch with him.

i was a bit worried about roy when he fought james toney. i loved the way JT would roll his shoulder and counter then give you that pop after. not a lot of people understood how great james was back in the day. he had this toughness about him and yet had this 'cutesie' style as well. i was so worried about roy because JT would counter so well. i was very surprised how quick roy was back at middleweight (compared to now weighing in at 175).

Johnson would beat Roy again if he tried to come back. One's hungry and puts on a lot of pressure...the other isn't and has shot reflexes with an above average chin.
