Comments Thread For: Sergio Martinez To Serve as Champion In and Out of Ring

By Jake Donovan - Eat your heart out, Charles Barkley.

Sure, his infamous “I am not paid to be a role model” quote was forever taken way out of context. The true meaning was always understood – that athletes and celebrities should never replace parents as the adult(s) their children admire the most.

But it doesn’t mean that athletes and celebrities can’t embrace the fact that they’re looked up to by fans of all ages.

One athlete who truly gets it is recently crowned middleweight king Sergio Martinez. The transplanted Argentinean - now making his home in Oxnard, California – wasted no time in having his press agents spread the word that he was here to serve as an ambassador of the sport, both in and out of the ring. WOW Way 2 go Sergio!!! Is this guy 4-real? talk about a politician in the making I wonder if he has his highschool diploma. You have a boxer that is running for congress that can barely read and a guy that has been screwed by judges left took fights against the most avoided, not really known by the public but still remains humble and is becoming a role model and leader for the sport of boxing.

I'll be the first to say lets not crap on this article b/c, Martinez seems to be a rare and genuine. This is not only a great read but I think it's about time i got up off my ass lol.
