How do you beat the (FLOYD's)shoulder roll?

It's not just about beating his shoulder roll, Floyd has more to his game than just that, he can move his head well and use the high guard if he needs to.
You have to be physically bigger and stronger than Floyd to beat him, keep him back with a great, varied jab, which prevents him from resetting, put him on the ropes and **** the body. You have to be able to push him back and keep a high workrate which all comes off a top quality jab. Oscar showed glimpses of it and had the perfect gameplan, but Floyd still managed to find another gear and run away with the fight. Floyd can be beaten, just like anyone else, but it would take one hell of a fighter with a great gameplan and perfect execution.
A tommy Hearns style fighter, or a prime Oscar, would be the two guys I would see giving Floyd hell and probably beating him (but even then, both guys are known to fall off late which would give Floyd a great chance)
Prime Duran also would give Floyd hell.Comment

Hatton was a little successful with pressure, bodywork and a jab, but once Floyd neutralized it he was screwed. But yes, a jab is the way to go when you want to fight Floyd's shoulder roll. As Pullcounter said, if he isn't scoring then he isn't winning. However Floyd is aware of this, which is why he neutralizes them. Pacquiao does the same thing.
Floyd was not using the shoulder roll when Zab knocked him down. He attacked Zab chin first (****** move that Roger scolded him for) and got hit with a check hook. And you could argue that the positioning of his feet caused the KD because he took the shot completely and went back without a problem, but then when he landed he fell down after a lengthy delay.Last edited by BoxerDood; 04-21-2010, 07:28 PM.Comment

It can be beat... floyd just hasn't fought many special fighters or fighters with the talent to really compete with him...oscar's the only one to date, and shane will be the second and both of them were over the hill (not shot) when they fought him. Floyd has beaten a lot of good, and elite world champions guys like hatton and judah, but all these guys are too flawed for a supreme fighter like floyd. Manny pacquiao has all the attributes to take advantage of the stance, southpaw, super fast, great power...but even he will find it difficult because floyd has physical advantages over him and manny doesnt have a dominant jab. Its a shame that floyd hasn't had many, what i would call, outstanding fighters in his era. Manny is really the only one, oscar and shane if they were 5 years younger. But shane is still a great fighter so lets see what happens may 1st.Comment

Paul Williams
- 81 inch reach
- Rediculous punch output
- Power that never fades
- Unorthodox punching
- 6'2" tall
- Granite chin
- Has mobility
- Can cut off the ring
- Pressure fighter
- Can fight inside and outside
- Knows how to box when need to
All that in a nutshell obliterates Floyd & his shoulder roll. And I am more a Floyd fan than a PWill fan.
People saying Pacquiao. Get off that ****. Pacquiao has a chance but its nothing more or less than a punchers chance. He doesn't do anything better than Floyd besides punch harder and faster. That's called a "Puncher's Chance".Comment

You need a high workrate fighter with speed in order to beat Floyd.
Pacquiao fits that criteria, some think this is another easy fight for Floyd, I don't know.
The thing is, you get the most exciting fights with Floyd when he is up against an opponent who is outmatched (I.E. Gatti, Corrales) and he lets his hands go and shows us his entire arsenal.
Against better fighters who pose more risk to him, he quickly figures out that he can't pummel them so he goes into auto-pilot, cruise- -mode, jabs their abdominal area, keeps moving, reacts off of what they do counterpunching etc,. and piles up points. Examples of that would be vs Castillo 2x, Delahoya, Baldomir (although he did hurt his hand there and went even more into cruise-mode than neccessary) even Marquez. And Mosley could be on that list as I see Floyd winning, but nothing dominant.Comment
