The latest buzz in the long line of Pacquiao challengers is Miguel Cotto wanting a chance to redeem himself against the PacMan. Apparently, Cotto wants revenge for his embarrassing loss at the hands of Manny last November. In my opinion, there’s only one way a rematch would make any sense for Manny Pacquiao. Let’s examine further.

Cotto must defeat Foreman
Before Miguel Cotto, Emanuel Steward, or anyone else can start talking about a rematch against Pacquiao, Cotto must defeat Yuri Foreman and capture the WBA super welterweight belt on June 5th at Yankees Stadium. But, a victory by decision won’t do it. Miguel must KO Foreman or at least beat him so bad that the ref has to stop the fight.
Miguel must look like a monster against Foreman. Anything less than a dominant performance and there won’t be any rematch. Cotto needs to prove that he has rebounded from the Pacquiao defeat. A knockout against the undefeated Foreman would strengthen the argument that Cotto is back and he can chalk up the loss to Pacquiao as just having a bad day.
Let’s not forget, Cotto is a former multi-time champion with only 2 losses. He has victories over Sugar Shane Mosley, Zab Judah, Joshua Clottey, and Paulie Malinaggi to name a few. Cotto is still a great fighter even thought he was soundly beaten my PacMan.
Pacquiao
Matthew Dean Sacramento, CA “How would a rematch against Cotto benefit Manny Pacquiao?”
Boxing fans would prefer to see Pacquiao fight someone else like Mayweather Jr, Mosley, or even possibly Andre Berto. But there are a few possible benefits for Pacquiao if he were to rematch Cotto.
If Cotto defeats Foreman, then I think winning a title in an 8th weight division could possibly entice the PacMan. Also, Top Rank would do what it can to inspire Pacquiao to consider this historical feat since both men fight under the Top Rank banner.
Let’s also not forget that the first fight between Cotto and Pacquiao did great at the gate and PPV buys. Depending on the source, Manny earned between 20-22 million dollars and Cotto earned between 10-13 million. Also, the fight sold around 15,500 tickets and made about 8.4 million dollars. The PPV buys were over 1 million.
A rematch between these two fighters at Cowboys Stadium would dramatically increase the numbers across the board. All parties involved could be looking at another huge payday.
Lastly, a possible Cotto rematch could also be used as leverage against Mayweather Jr. The more potential fights that Manny has in hand, the less he needs Mayweather and the more Mayweather needs Manny.
Conclusion
On the surface, a rematch between Manny and Miguel makes little sense. However, if you dig deeper, you will see that there are some benefits to Cotto vs. PacMan 2. Other than a fight against Mayweather, Mosley or Berto, I would prefer a rematch against Cotto if and only if Miguel captures the title from Foreman in spectacular fashion on June 5th. I'd love to see Manny Pacquiao win a title in an 8th division and further cement his place as one of the greatest boxers of All-Time.
