GL: Cong**** on your championship winning effort. Can you give us some thoughts on your performance? "For nine weeks I trained and planned to do exactly what happened. I had blueprint of what had to be done; win the first four rounds and then give some confidence to the champion for the next two or three and then come back strong to finish the fight the way any challenger is supposed to finish, winning the championship rounds."
GL: So in other words, you took your foot off the gas on purpose to break him down in the championship rounds?
Sergio Martinez: "That's correct. My trainer told me not to double up on my punches until the eighth round."
GL: Where would you like to campaign, 154 or 160?
SM: "I feel good at both divisions. I have a contract with a rematch clause and they have a few weeks to make a decision, I think it's 30 days for him to take the rematch or not. If he doesn't take it, we plan to sit with my promoter and make a decision on what will be the best offer to find the challenger for him."
GL: You've been twelve rounds with both of them, who is tougher, Pavlik or Williams?
SM: "Paul Williams was probably the more difficult, however the more dangerous was Pavlik for his punch and physical advantage."
GL: What's the soonest we could expect you back in the ring?
SM: "As soon as HBO gives me a date. I will not wait for that though, because I will be back in full training in ten days."
GL: If Pavlik doesn't want the rematch, what fight do you want to make the most?
SM: "I want the rematch with Margarito and then I have a score to settle with Paul Williams."
GL: Does the longer you stay at middleweight have any impact on your future at 154?
SM: "I'm not really a middleweight, I'm a smaller middleweight, but I'm a very, very good junior middleweight."
GL: If I were you, the fight I'd be hoping to land is Miguel Cotto?
SM: "Sounds like music to my ears. He's a great champion, but he has to first beat Yuri Foreman and then it will be a tremendous unification."
GL: How long do you have before you have to make a decision with your 154 pound belt?
SM: "The WBC has given me 15 days, but since Pavlik has 30 days in the contract, my people will ask them to wait and see. I want to keep the titles I have in both divisions, I will do my best to keep them."
GL: Closing thoughts?
SM: "Assure all of the fans that in every fight I fight on HBO, I will give 110% to the boxing fans. I want the fans to watch the best pound for pound boxer and I'm trying to be one. I know it will take some time, but that's what I'm working on and I will always give my best.
