    Define boxing skills ?

This is in response to a thread debating about whether Phony Boy outskilled Juanita.

My definition of skill, it's something that is acquired not something you're born with. Like, natural athletic ability is not learned, throwing a picture perfect left hook is something that is taught.

Speed, sense of timing, power, sense of distance, strength are all God given physical attributes/instincts. It can also be developed through proper training, but your natural attributes determines how fast or how strong you can get, of course, having a strong work ethic helps. When you hone your skills it further strengthens what God already gave us.

    A) Knowing the proper bio-mechanics to throw different types of punches is a learned skill

    B) Knowing which punch is best against a particular situation is something that is taught.

For example: If an opponent jabs at your face, you slip and hook to the side of the body is the most common counter.

    C) Cutting off the ring, that's an acquired skill.

    D) Footwork, that's also an acquired skill.

    E) Learning certain angles and positioning are skills that is developed through years of training.

An example of someone who is a natural at something. Some people just have a knack for finding the target, while some have to be taught, either way both types still had to practice to get better at it.

People's temperament tends to determine the type of fighting style they shine in. An aggressive person will probably be more comfortable as a come forward fighter, and some people are more reserved and will probably feel more comfortable as a counter-puncher. Of course, nothing is written in stone, once a fighter learns more skills he gets more comfortable with other styles

So Floyd beat Marquez on GOD given ability and not skill? By that logic, Floyd would have beaten Marquez in Floyd's first professional fight, surely he's "learned" more skills since then right?

Bhop, you need to re-read my post.

Some are innate, i prefer to use humans as examples, no one teaches us to be fast or powerful but we can develop speed and power through proper training to further enhance what we already have to begin with.

      I'll use my own experiences.

For example, before I even started boxing, my straight punch had a high success rate, , because I had a knack for finding the right spot(I was never taught) , I ended up taking up boxing and it turned a good puncher into an even better puncher.

Like I said, for some people it comes naturally to them, but it doesn't mean they're polished. Just like my straight punch, prior to boxing, I didn't throw it properly, however, it was always powerful and accurate, it just got better with proper boxing training.

** Whether you already run a 4.4 40 or a 4.8 40, through practice we can all get better**

No, no, of course Phony Boy utilized a combination of his athleticism and skills he had acquired through his Dad's teachings.

But, from the looks of it, he could've had one hand tied behind his back and still have beaten Juanita, lol. One thing that was evident, there was a significant size difference, there was an obvious disparity in the speed and agility department.

Phony Boy says so himself, every chance that he gets, he always says, that "none of his opponents has he felt he had to pull out his "A" game, well, then I guess we haven't seen a whole lot from Phony Boy, I guess it's safe to say that he's been able keep his 0 with the fact that he has been faster than most of his opponents. Don't you think ?

Tell me a fighter that ***** has fought where he didn't have a significant edge in speed, the only guy that i could think of that showed him up in that area was Zab, but, that's all Zab had.

So now you believe everything Floyd says? Or just use it when it can help support an argument? Floyd said he was a billionaire also, believe him? Youre contradicting alot of your argument, speed doesnt win fights, skills do. So why did Pac have such a hard time with Marquez if it doesnt take skill to beat Marquez?

speed isnt a skill but timing and sense of distance is, thats not god given u learn it in the gym, some learn easier but the same thing goes for everything. some ppl are naturally more well coordinated than others, they will have an easier time learning footwork, its still a skill.

Thats FM's skill right there making it appear that he could of beaten Marquez with one hand....

Obviously to be a complete top tier fighter (or any other high level athelete) you need to have a combination of athleticism (natural and trained), skill sets which are obviously improved by the fighters natural athleticism... but above this it's also down to mental attitude (which again is a natural gift) and also down to the right place at the right time scenario... (see Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers excellent book btw ) for example FMJ coming from a boxing family and growing up in and around the sport, but there could be someone out there who is naturally more gifted than him but never got the chance to get into the ring or even be aware that naturally perfect for the sport of boxing..

The original question was "define boxing skills"? but i think we've drifted away from it because at the end of the day the likes of FMJ are now athletes who could quite easily go into other sports and possibly compete at above average levels due to their natural and progressed athleticism... But a Boxers skill set is: Speed, Power, Timing, eye to hand co-ordination (Natural to a point but need to progressed) - footwork, ring smarts, offense and defense (only developed through experience and training).. theres more but you get my drift..

                  Sorry for waffling ha ha

                    Ts has it right.

                    Speed, reflexes, power, athleticism are all attributes that some are more gifted in than others, but can be improved on. They aren't skills. You can be a freak of an athlete with natural speed, power etc but that doesn't make you a skilled fighter. Skills are different, see below;

Technical things like correct punching, blocking, footwork etc are skills that have to be learned. No one is born with them. Some can pick it up easier, like people with good natural co-ordination, but without proper honing and work they will never be complete.
