The main problem with boxing has been as soon as guys become big in boxing, they are quick to retire afterwards. I understand the fear of doing anything to tarnish what you have accomplished, but boxing was always great when guys "arrived", got in the spotlight, and everyfight afterwards was huge.
here are some examples:
Floyd Mayweather- He had a career defining fight with DLH, then Hatton and becomes the face of boxing. Now that he is in the spot light, a fight with Cotto, Margarito etc would have been huge, but instead of continuing his buzz he retires.
Joe Calzaghe-He had two career defining wins, even though jones was past it, and he brought alot attention to himself as a fighter. His division gets real hot and he has a chance to really bring alot of attention to himself and the UK but again he retires.
Those are just two recent examples. Now we have more rumors, and this is the whole point of me making this thread, that guys like Manny Pacquiao, David Haye, and others top stars contemplating retiring soon.
Now while I understand the idea of not taking to much punishment but these guys clearly have several years left in them, and for boxing to be really successful we need two things to happen:
1. Them to continue the buzz they get after career defining wins (in Manny case a huge win over FM)
2. Or the fight until the next future star beats them in a passing of the torch type fight.
It's a cycle in boxing that has always made the sport prosper, but unfortunately it has been broken lately. Now I'm not saying fight until you lose, I'm just saying so many potential mega fights are lost, and also the young guys don't get the opportunity to become stars by beating these guys in the spot light.
Think about tihs:
Imagine Floyd, Trinidad, and Manny not fighting DLH and the effect that would have had as far as stardom is concerned.
Imagine if Shane never gave guys like Winky wright and Forrest a shot. They never where stars but without him they would be virtual unknown to most fans.
Imagine if B-hop didn't give Taylor his shot, and in turn Taylor didn't give Pavlik his shot. Hell even this pas weekend was proof as Martinez was unknown but was giving a shot against a well known fighter in Pavlik.
