that's only one source though. every other source says that he came down stairs and told the hotel staff and then the cops that he did kill her.

supposedly he killed her around 1:30am and then came downstairs and confessed to the staff at 5:30am.

That means that phone call you're referring to could have happened right after the murder when Valero still thought he could get away with it. But then several hours later after the drugs wore off and he realized he's done for, he gave up and confessed. it makes perfect sense. he murdered her stop trying to cover for him.
