I just wanted to ask how you see that fight going down. I can't see it. Yes, movement obviously bothers Pavlik but look at the fighters who have beaten him. Bernard Hopkins was big and able to muscle Pavlik with ease along with his movement. Sergio Martinez is a southpaw with an unconventional style. They each brought things to the table that troubled Pavlik besides the movement.
Let's look at the Martinez fight. Pavlik had adjusted and Sergio had gotten tired from working so hard to avoid Pavlik. Those middle rounds were dominated by Pavlik. Whether it was the cut or Sergio catching a second wind that caused the domination the rest of the way depends on who you ask, but Pavlik was not completely helpless the entire fight against Sergio's speed and movement.
If Floyd and Pavlik fought, it would have to be at 160 to have any legitimacy. If it was at 154 Pavlik would be a DLH against Pac style zombie in the ring. This means putting on weight for Floyd that he has never put on. That means slowing him down. Also, on fight night there is probably a 25-30 pound weight difference because Pavlik is coming in that ring around 180 and Floyd will be in the 150's. Floyd would not be able to bother Pavlik in the least bit with his punches. That would really hurt Floyd.
The biggest issue I have in believing Floyd could beat Pavlik is that Floyd does not fight a style that would work. Sergio is extremely unconventional, fighting in and out, using his reflexes and punching power to keep Pavlik. For another example of a fighter beating a guy that is MUCH bigger than him, Roy Jones when he beat Ruiz. Jones was also very unconventional and hard to predict and pin down. He was a powerful, incredibly athletic freak of a boxer.
Floyd Mayweather does not fight like that. His style works against him if he fights Pavlik at 160. He tries to control distance, not happening against a 6'2 lanky guy with a good jab like Pavlik. He depends on making you miss up close and countering to keep you off, not going to work against Pavlik. His shots would be damn near ineffective, he couldn't keep Pavlik honest. He also doesn't throw much, and adding at least 7 pounds isn't going to make him throw more.
If Floyd did try and take a cue from Hopkins or Pavlik he would be unable to do it. If he tried to just avoid Pavlik and land odd shots whenever he could he would tire himself out by the 4th round. It would make him expend too much energy.
How does he do it, for those who think he does?
