Kelly Pavlik suffers from Juan Diaz syndrome. .

If the guy gets cut he goes from fighting a good fight and winning to giving up and taking a beating without trying to win.

Alot of fighters suffer from that disorder except Katsidis. Katsdis seems to get better when he gets cut... Katsidis and Gatti both have that warrior heart. Honestly, I don't know many fighters like Gatti and Kats who seem to be able to fight through that and still put a serious effort on.

Possibly. I think he could have won the fight if not for the cut. Thats not an excuse by the way. As I said in another thread, some fighters can fight well when cut badly, some can't. Martinez did what he had to do.

i think he also suffers the other juan syndrome. the one where a fighter isnt that talented but gets the most of their abilities only to fall a bit short.

They both don't believe in doing sit ups.

I see what you're saying but kelly had some NASTY cuts whereas diaz was never cut that bad.

Also I think it was also a case of Martinez just stepping it up, he was throwing wicked combinations whereas the middle rounds he was only throwing 1 or 2 punches at a time. Martinez said that was his plan going into the fight - to overwhelm him with punches during latter part of the fight so who knows.

What was interesting to me, and seemed a little fishy, is that not once did the ref stop to have the doctor take a look at the cut. I mean, i've seen fights stopped with much less cuts than that and almost every time someone is cut that bad the doctor always checks it out.

If he wasn't white, it would have been stopped.

I think it had to do with the cut being from a punch and Pavlik was the champ. The cut happened late in the fight (9th rd) and I just think officials are more hesitant to stop close fights like that on a cut, especially in such a big fight.

Although I agree that it was odd that no one even really took a serious look at it.

Maybe Martinez was saving up but its quite some coincidence imo that he suddenly turned on the gas when Pavlik was cut and unable to see well. Martinez did what he had to do though, but i thought Pavlik was fighting well till then
