Significant decline in world titles held by Americans?

This never crosses my mind. Its irrelevant. They are all boxers no matter where they are from. Who cares.

Bute (Romania)
Gamboa (Cuba)
Klitschkos (Ukraine)
Golovkin (Kazakhstan)
Lemieux (Canada)
Adamek (Poland)
Alexander (USA)
Boytsov (Russia)
Martinez (Argentina)
Alvarez (Mexico)
Helenius (Finland)
Pulev (Bulgaria)

All are exciting boxer-punchers though.

I'm not a fan of brawlers, holders, or runners, and I'm not much for overly defensive or feather-fisted fighters.

I don't pay attention to where they are from, I just like to watch them.
But it is true interest in boxing has fallen off. Years ago kids went to the gym to be like Louis, Ali or even Ray Leonard. Now they all want to be Kobe or Lebron. American kids are pushed by schools to play football, baseball or basketball.
But back in the day boxing was a big event on national TV, the public was exposed to the sport and knew the fighters. Now only the HBO subscribers are really exposed.

With Kelly Pavlik losing the WBO, WBC, and Ring titles last night, the US is now down to only 7 US-born world titleholders with a total of 8 world titles (I'm not counting the interims such as the belt held by Dawson).

Other countries such as the Philippines, Argentina, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, Mexico and the UK are catching up.

The excuse for heavyweights is "all the big men are in the NBA", but what about middleweight, flyweight, bantamweight, etc?
