Its official: Amir Khan struck a deal with ITV

    18 April 2010
    IT'S KHAN THE CHANNEL HOPPER
    Tom Hopkinson

Amir Khan has struck a deal with ITV to screen his clash with Paulie Malignaggi.

The WBA light-welterweight champion's last five fights have been shown on Sky Sports Box Office. But he has snubbed a take-it-or-leave it pay-per-view offer from Sky in favour of a return to terrestrial television.

Khan, 22, has never been a knockout success in terms of pay-perview sales and his camp have decided to link up with ITV in the hope that more people will tune in.

His departure from Sky Sports is amicable, although People Sport understands future opponents will have to be marquee names to tempt Sky to link back up.

Khan faces Malignaggi, who lost to Ricky Hatton in 2008, at Madison Square Garden on May 15. It is his first fight since splitting from promoter Frank Warren and joining Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy.

More people will watch this fight than most Americans watch their own fighters and we are a much smaller nation

Great move by Khan and ITV hopefully this relationship can last a lot longer than the last time.

This is what I despise about boxing. Amir comes back cap in hand to the Uk audience with free to view shows but just you wait 2-3 fights down the line it'll be sky PPV £29.99 fights again.

I do wish boxers looked at the long term financial implications like exposure and sponsorship/advertising. There is a reason boxers 10/20 years ago made so much more than today's fighters by relative standards.
