Comments Thread For: Late Rally Surges Martinez Past Pavlik To Grab The Crown

By Jake Donovan - Justice was finally served on the scorecards on Saturday evening for Sergio Martinez, who overcame a knockdown and mid-rounds funk to close strong en route to annexing the World middleweight crown from Kelly Pavlik in front of packed house at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Scores were 115-111, 116-111 and 115-112 for Martinez, who becomes the first fighter of Argentinean heritage since the legendary Carlos Monzon to lay claim to the lineal middleweight championship.

Pavlik, 159.5, Youngstown, OH, looked to impose his massive size and natural weight advantage from the opening bell. The defending champion threw a heavy jab, but was unable to punch in combination early on.

Martinez, 159.5, formerly of Buenos Aires, Argentina, offered constant lateral movements, stopping every so often to drop right hooks and left hands. One right hook in particular opened a cut outside of Pavlik’s left eye, which he continued to target with his jab. [Click Here To Read More]

I thought Martinez won the first 3 rounds and then Pavlik won 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 plus the knockdown. The cuts were the key, i think Pavlik would have won if not for the cuts

Good performance by Martinez. He fought a smart fight. Not taking anything away from his victory, but Pavlik's cut man has to do better then that!
:e did even try to stop the blood.
I say use the rematch clause and immediately fire that cutman. That was the worst job I have ever seen by a cutman!!!

In the late rds Sergio looked like Joe calzaghe putting punches in bunches he showed a lot of heart Pavlik was closing the distance the HBO commentary stated Sergio had to stay in there and fight with the big puncher Pavlik then rds 8-12 he exploded stayed in the pocket and Joe Calzaghe'd him

Yeah and the scores wouldn't of been as close if palvik didn't score that off balance knockdown. Once Sergio stepped on the gas Pavlik had no chance. There are no what ifs in boxing.

Jack needs to do the admirable thing and resign himself from Pavlik rematch. Pavlik made adjustments in the middle rounds and improved. Martinez missed a lot of shots in the middle rounds as a result and Pavlik never made him pay- not once. Speed was a factor, but poor "3-2" cornering was too.

I guess that's better than saying nothing like BHop fight. Many lost opportunities in those middle rounds. The blueprint for Pavlik was made by Bernard, solidified by Martinez. Pavlik has become a pretty easy target from here out. A different trainer is the only OPTION at this point, so Pavlik can discover if he can learn another dimension of himself. prolly not. Go back to school and learn something new, or go to the bar and discuss glory days. Beer masks pain so drink up Kel, or learn to counter those with faster hands to create opportunities.

                  Kelly needs a new trainer.

He has outgrown 160, can't beat the current champion, and would get schooled by the better guys at 168.

Kelly needs some serious career and boxing development.
