Wouldn't a helicopter actually be more dangerous than a plane in this situation?

No, they fly much lower.

I also thought that perhaps it's less of an issue because of the propeller a helicopter uses. The danger with planes i imagine is volcanic ash or whatever getting ****** into the jet engines and messing them up. Less of an issue with a helicopter?
