2 big cards in Chi-Town in August???

Don King just announced that the card featuring Rahman-Barrett, Mayorga-Piccarillo & Golota will take place in Chicago on August 13 on PPV, only 7 days before a scheduled card on the 20th featuring Vargas-Castillejo & Chi-Juarez....a few questions concerning these events:

    1. Since when is Chicago a big fight town?

    2. Do you consider DK's scheduling tactic a clever marketing procedure, or a deviant action towards Main Events and their proposed card the next week?

    3. Will Vargas ditch Castillejo as an opponent, since it's now clear that the WBC title isn't on the line?

    4. If both cards go ahead as planned, which will draw the bigger crowd?

    YOUR THOUGHTS!!!!

Chicago was the biggest fight city in the 20's-50's

    Every champ fought there

Yeah, it's pretty crazy that we are getting major fights over here now. I'm going to try to attend both. I was going to buy tickets at the door for Golota-Brewster but THANK GOD I overslept. Paying for 53 seconds would have ******. But props to Brewster!

I think both fights will do well but its highly possible the Vargas fight will draw more because of the Latin population in Chicago. But I'm not going to miss an oppurtunity to see Mayorga fight the week before.

        1. Since way back. Then since the early 1980s, no major event hit Chicago til Brewster/Golota, which drew 20,000 plus paying customers, blowing away recent MSG crowds, making King look towards the midwest (Judah/Spinks II hit an indoor attendance record) other than venues he's not making much money at.

        2. I don't think King is threatened by the Allstate Arena card. The tickets there are cheaper, the fighters are not as famous or ranked as high.

        3. I don't know that.

        4. The United Center fights, obviously. Golota is likely being paired against another Polish fighter. There was a huge Polish population at the last United Center event, featuring Golota and Adamek. Plus the fight card features Byrd and Rahman, much more recognizable names since the average fan knows more about heavyweights. Other than Vargas, the Aug. 20 show doesn't have any big names.

I plan to possibly attend one. I wish the United Center info and on-sale dates would go up before Friday, when the Allstate tickets go on sale. Still, I've never sat ringside and it's only $250 for Juarez/Chi & Vargas/Castillejo...

It'll be $500 for ringside at the Byrd fight and $300 for the seats I had at Brewster/Golota...

Doors opened at 4 pm. There were 7 fights. I've never understood why people would drop money on fight tickets and only show up for the main event.

You would have been sitting in the upper deck, as that's about all that was left unsold...
